Hours after Oregon State Beavers tight end J.T. Byrne announced he was headed to the transfer portal, the second-year freshman found a new home in California.

The 6-foot-5, 247-pound Byrne, who unveiled on social media his intention to transfer and new landing spot Thursday, played nine games last season after taking a redshirt in 2021. Byrne didn’t catch a pass during the 2022 season.

Byrne is returning to the Bay Area, as he grew up in Carmel, Calif.

He was a 3-star prospect by 247 Sports and considered one of the country’s top 50 tight ends when he signed with Oregon State in 2020.

OSU currently has seven tight ends on its roster, including Cooper Jensen, who signed with the Beavers in December. The team’s headliners at tight end heading into spring practice are sophomore Jack Velling and junior Jake Overman.

Oregon State has lost two tight ends from its 2022 roster. In addition to Byrne, junior Luke Musgrave has declared for the NFL draft.
