No. 9 Men’s Tennis sweeps Columbia, 4-0

Austin – No. 9 Texas Men’s Tennis swept Columbia, 4-0, in the opening round of the ITA Kickoff Weekend at the Texas Tennis Center on Saturday. The win advances the Longhorns to Sunday’s championship match against Oregon.

Texas won the doubles point and used singles victories from sophomores No. 73 Cleeve Harper at No. 5, No. 105 Siem Woldeab at No. 4, and No. 20 Micah Braswell at No. 2 to complete the sweep.

In singles, Harper was first off the court with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Ishaan Ravichander. Harper grabbed the first set by sandwiching two 3-0 runs around one game for Ravichander that he won on serve, while in the second, Ravichander’s lone win also came on a hold, this time at 2-1 for Harper, who took it from there for the victory and a 2-0 lead for Texas.

Woldeab was next with an equally impressive 6-1, 6-2 victory over Roko Horvat. Horvat broke serve on a deuce point in the opening game, but Woldeab set out on an 11-0 run that gave him a 5-0 lead in the second. Horvat picked up a break on a deuce point and then held for 5-2, but Woldeab closed on serve in the next game to extend the Longhorns lead to 3-0.

That left Braswell for the clinch as he secured a 6-2, 6-3 ranked win over No. 87 Hugo Hashimoto. Braswell opened the match with a break, and the set stayed on serve from there until his second break at 5-2, leading to a deuce-point hold for the win. The second set followed the same pattern to start, but this time Braswell’s second break came at 4-1 on a deuce point. That started a string of five straight breaks, two more of which came on deuce points, leading to the final for Braswell and the overall team win.

In the remaining matches when play stopped, freshman Pierre-Yves Bailly led No. 12 Alex Kontzen, 6-2, 3-3, at No. 1, senior Richard Ciamarra dropped a first set tiebreaker, but was leading in the second set, 6-7 (5), 3-1, against Max Westphal at No. 3, and junior Nevin Arimilli was even in a first-set tiebreaker with a 7-7 score at No. 6.

Earlier, the Longhorns handled the double point efficiently with a 6-0 win for No. 13 Ciamarra and Harper over Westphal and Theo Winegar at No. 1, and a 6-1 victory for Woldeab and Bailly against Kotzen and Horvat at No. 2. Ciamarra and Harper won both deuce points in the match in games one and five for the sweep, and Woldeab and Bailly did the same in games two and four. Columbia took their game on serve at 5-1 before Texas closed it. In the third match, Braswell and Huang led Henry Ruger and Jayden Templeman, 4-1, when play stopped.

The Longhorns will now play Oregon on Sunday at 12 p.m. CT for the right to advance to the ITA National Indoor Championships from Feb. 18-21 in Seattle, Wash.
