The man who built the Portland Marathon into a beloved local institution secretly pilfered more than $1 million out of the organization between 2012 and 2017, federal prosecutors claim.

A federal grand jury issued an indictment Thursday accusing Lester Smith, who now resides in Texas, of two counts of wire fraud and three counts of tax evasion. Smith secretly took more than a million dollars out of the marathon nonprofit’s banks accounts to “fund home remodeling projects, pay for shopping sprees at high-end department stores, and purchase home decor, furniture, and other luxury goods and services,” the indictment alleges.
